History of Tai Chi for Arthritis
For centuries, Tai Chi has been known in China to be an effective way for people with arthritis to exercise. There are 5 main styles of Tai Chi, however Sun Style Tai Chi is especially beneficial for arthritis because it contains powerful Qigong exercises to enhance healing, agile steps to improve mobility and much depth to hold learner’s interest. In 1997, Dr Lam led a team of Tai Chi and medical experts to design his Tai Chi for Arthritis Program based on Sun style Tai Chi. This program is easy-to-learn, safe and a very effective exercise, especially for people with joint sensitivities.
In 2001 three Korean Universities participated in a randomized study to determine the benefits (if any) of the Tai Chi for Arthritis Program. It was scientifically shown to relieve pain, improve quality of life and be safe for people with arthritis These findings led Arthritis Foundations world wide to adopt this program as a way to support their population. Recommended by Rheumatologists, Tai Chi for Arthritis is specifically designed for people with joint sensitivities and for those wanting a gentle approach to exercise. Some of the many benefits from this program include better balance, improved posture, increased muscle tone, greater concentration & coordination, reduced pain, and an overall feeling of wellbeing.
The program includes warm-up, wind-down, Qigong exercises, special precautions and a set of 32 movements.
With permission of Dr. Lam, Sifu Chris Bouguyon created a 32 movement sword form to challenge his more advanced Tai Chi for Arthritis students. As they become comfortable with the 32 movement open hand set, Sifu Chris introduces this form to expand their awareness and increase their focus. Based on their abilities and challenges, students begin with either a small stick or a cut down "pool noodle" as their sword until they become more comfortable with the movements. They can then move to a wooden or metal training sword to further enhance their strength.
